Apple & Microsoft: Please Stop Advertising

By will - Posted on 25 September 2008

I'm a Mac, no wait, I'm a PC too. What, you can use both?! You sure can and I'm completely comfortable with that. If I could afford it and could justify the need, I would own both. I guess that makes me some sort of crazy computer-bi-sexual freak. Deal with it. That aside, I know for sure that it makes me is completely annoyed by the add campaigns of both companies.

First, Apple.
Shut the F*** up about how you're so much better than PC's because in many ways you are not.

1) Please stop rumors that Macs are virus free because if I receive any more virus related spam from one of my friends with a Mac I'm gonna lose it. What's that, you have a crush on me, NO WAY, I had no idea! I'll make sure to roll camera so everyone can see my office destruction on Youtube after I check my email later.

2) You're commercials are worse than John McCain's. The pizza box one makes me involuntarily change the channel and vomit simultaneously. Stop telling me why you think Windows sucks, and tell my why Macs are worth double the price for the same hardware.

3) Just because the Mac doesn't get the blue screen doesn't mean they don't lock up and fail. In fact, in the past year my computer fatal error count goes something like this.
Windows: 0
Mac: too many to count (at least once every other week)
The fade to gray is just as annoying as a blue screen, if not more because now you're teasing me with all the work I lost while you tell me that the computer is about the reboot.

4) A Mac is a PC [personal computer]. Mac OS is what you're selling, get it straight.

5) Sometimes I honestly feel like your OS thinks I'm stupid, very stupid. I know a large number of Mac users and can understand why you would think so, but stop hiding the nuts and bolts. I'm not a programmer of any sort, but I'm a savvy computer user and don't appreciate being treated like a child.

6) It's great that you can run Microsoft Office, but can you figure out how to run big boy programs like AutoCAD, SPSS, etc. I'm a designer/planner/architect and I can't use your stupid computer half the time because the programs either don't work period, fail constantly, or work improperly.

Side Note: for those of you bludgeoning Microsoft and snickering about the "I'm a PC" add being produce on a Mac, you should know that Microsoft did not produce it. Crispin Porter & Bogusky did. They're a marketing agency that Microsoft hired to do their most recent add campaign. That's how marketing tends to work. But good job spending your time to find that meta data, idiots. Microsoft has no control over the software/hardware they use.

On to the Microsoft Empire.
Bill Gates is a weird fellow, you might not want him in your adds.

1) Let's think here. How should we try and remove the stigma that Windows is for older nerdy people so we can start to win back the next generation of computer users. Of course, lets have Bill Gates appear in adds. WRONG. I don't think you can blame all of this one on Crispin Porter & Bogusky, but maybe they like the square stereotype.

2) Grow a pair and fight back. If I've learned anything from politics, you must fight fire with fire. That Seinfeld fellow is entertaining and all, but the adds don't really convey the mud slinging I was hoping for. Come on, call Mac users hippies, dumb, or make fun of them for being lured in by "pretty" things.

3) If I can put it in my house or carry it around with me its a PC. Am I the only person that's really annoyed by this. You're selling windows. That I'm a PC commercial told me nothing. Those people could be using Linux for all I know.

4) Please acknowledge that there are other software providers in the world besides yourself. I want to use the programs I like, some of which are yours, but not all. But maybe, just maybe, I want to use something different. Please allow me to use what I want, and remove all of your pre-installed crap. I've had my computer for 4 years and still can't figure out how to remove some of this stuff/crap.

5) Stop trying to copy Apple and failing miserably. Think next time before you open your mouth, or release Vista.

So why can't we all just get along, use the computers for their strong points, and move on with our lives.

Now back to saving the world everyone!!!
