"A letter to America: you cannot be serious"

I found this today on Reddit:

The author talks a lot about broader issues that also confound me, but here are my favorite parts:

A Quick Lesson on Statistical Averages and an Application to Presidential Polls

I want everyone to take a big breathe, get a glass of water, and go to the USA Today Poll Tracker on the internets, or at least one of them.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/poll-tracker.htm

This page is a conglomeration of popular Presidential polls and they've even provided a very nice trend line for today’s lesson. This lesson is about outliers and their effect on the strength of statistical averages in linear regression, which is what a trend line represents. It’s also more commonly referred to as the line of best fit.

Changes to the Site

I've got some changes to the site underway. First, I'm moving away (somewhat) from the politics theme. I originally started the site with the intention to blog about the election, my gripes with Congress and so on. And while I still reserve the right to post on those topics, I'm moving in a more eclectic direction.

It'll be more like two guys talking over beers and waxing philosophical. With some random interesting bits (or funny bits?) thrown in for good measure.

Did They Cure Cancer? (and why isn't this news?)

Here are the links to an interesting article and the university research web page.

Worth a look at least.

You Can't Soak the Rich

"Presidential candidates, instead of disputing how much more tax to impose on whom, would be better advised to come up with plans for increasing GDP while ridding the tax system of its wearying complexity. That would be a formula for success."

I couldn't agree more with this this opinion column by David Ranson in the WSJ today. I'll let you read the article, but I have to pile on (as always).

No More Farm Subsidies!

Congress is at it again in their relentless pursuit of special interests and screwing the little guy. The little guy in this case being both the American Taxpayer and small farmers. The proposed 2008 Farm Bill has little in the way of meaningful reform and essentially perpetuates a system in which large farmers will continue to receive direct payments. The bill itself is a 5-year 300 billion dollar program. You read that right, three hundred BILLION.

Change of Heart or Just More Strategery?

Here's the last from Newsweek: 'Vast right-wing conspiracy' leader's paper backs Clinton.

Here's the intro to the article, "Could it be the 'vast right wing conspiracy' is having second thoughts? Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton was endorsed Sunday by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, whose owner and publisher, billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, personally funded many of the investigations that led to President Clinton's impeachment in 1998."

I Guess Debating the Issues is Too Much to Ask

This caught my eye on Digg:

Obama Building War Machine to Respond to 'Swift Boat' Attacks

The article quotes David Axelrod, Obama's Chief Strategist as saying, "He's not going to sit there and sing 'Kumbaya' as the missiles are raining in". Ugh.

Is It Over Yet?

Well, we've only got about 18 hours until polls open in Pennsylvania to kick off the next round of voting in the contentious democratic primary. Looks like it's going to be a lot closer than people originally thought.

Rasmussen has Hillary 49% Obama 44%

Obama Gives Hillary The Finger

OK, now you *must* have the audio on to appreciate this clip. But seriously, watch it and judge for yourself:

I don't usually get into this sort of thing, but you have to admit, it REALLY looks like he's giving her the finger!
